The first set of links on this page provides directions to family history societies that also have interests covering parts of the metropolitan area or bordering on the West Middlesex area. If you are not sure which society covers a particular place, please consult our Gazetteer for help. Additional links relate to local history and other societies that are active within the West Middlesex area and to national organisations and societies relating to family history.

Family History Societies

  • London Westminster and Middlesex FHS: Covers the City of London, the City of Westminster and the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Camden, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow and Islington, together with parts of Ealing and Hillingdon. This society was formed in 2004 from the merger of the London and North Middlesex Family History Society and the Westminster & Central Middlesex Family History Society.
  • Hillingdon Family History Society: Covers the nine ancient Middlesex parishes that now comprise the London Borough of Hillingdon: Cowley, Harefield, Harlington, Harmondsworth, Hayes, Hillingdon, Ickenham, Ruislip and West Drayton
  • East of London Family History Society: Covers the area of Greater London north of the River Thames extending from the edge of the City of London at Bishopsgate and Aldgate, eastwards through the London Boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, to the edge of Metropolitan Essex at Havering.
  • East Surrey Family History Society: Covers that part of the ancient county of Surrey lying to the east of a line drawn from the river at Thames Ditton south to Dorking, including the metropolitan areas of Southwark, Lambeth, Rotherhithe, Wandsworth, etc.
  • West Surrey Family History Society: Covers all the western part of the ancient country of Surrey, but has records and publications for a much wider area of Surrey and Middlesex.
  • North West Kent Family History Society: Covers South East London and western Kent, extending north to the River Thames and west to the original Kent/Surrey boundary and including the London Boroughs of Greenwich, Bexley, Lewisham and Bromley.
  • Berkshire Family History Society: Covers the whole of the ancient English county of Berkshire.
  • Buckinghamshire Family History Society: Covers the whole of the ancient English county of Buckinghamshire.
  • Catholic Family History Society: The Society is a reference point for Roman Catholic sources of family history information.

Organisations

  • Federation of Family History Societies: The Federation represents over 220 family history societies and genealogical organisations world-wide. The site includes current contacts for the member societies as well as regular updates on family history news.
  • Society of Genealogists: The Society's library in London holds the largest collection of parish register copies in the country as well as numerous genealogies, local histories, poll books and directories etc. The site includes a searchable library catalogue as well as details of lectures, courses, projects and family history news.
  • Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies: The Institute offers courses in genealogy, heraldry and related subjects, including those leading to professional qualifications in the subject.
  • Guild of One-Name Studies: The principal UK-based organisation for one-name studies.
  • Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives: An organisation aiming to promote and maintain high standards of professional conduct and expertise within genealogy, heraldry and record searching. Includes contact lists of members who offer research services.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting is on Thursday 16th January 2025. The focus of the meeting will be a talk by Ian Porter titled The Real Downton Abbey. Ian will be speaking on Zoom. Members may be remote or at St. John's.

Next Fair

Our next family history fair is the East Surrey Virtual Family History Fair on Saturday 25th January.
